Here is a post I told you about a LONG time ago. I was all excited to be building the kids a tp in the back yard that Ben told me we could fence in (which still isn't done). I was putting the post off because the plants just weren't filling in. They still haven't. But I don't think they are going to get any better this year. As you can see by the pics we may have some branches to trim. Hopeing more sun light next year will help. (Above) After setting the poles up I wrapped grape vine (found on our property) around it tacking it on with tiny nails. This was to provide a trellis for the plants. I then robbed the neighbors field stone pile to create a border inside and ooutside the teepee. Filled it with dirt from our compost pile and planted marrigolds, peas and a few beans. I was really wanting to only to flowers but they just weren't growing so onto veggies. In hind sight I may plant beans and peas on it again next year. The kids LOVE to pick veggies out of the garden and eat them. Kaiters even walked up to the broccoli plant the other day, took hold and ate a head of broccoli straight from the plant. Kids. (ABOVE) You can see that I tied the original 3 poles together to help me get them set up on my own and act as a base. I just propped the rest of the poles in "V"s after that. I figured by wrapping them in grape vine they would be sturdy enough. It took me awhile to get the mulch to put in the TeePee but we finally got it. 6 bags later it is officially finished. Hopefully next year the plants grow better. (And the yard is fenced in) Kait wants to know about child labor laws. LIVING ON THE CHEEP TIP #1 6 bags of mulch would cost you, at best $20 right? That would have been the 6 bags we put under the teepee. Well if you are like me and aren't to particular about having multiple colores of mulch in your yard its pretty simple, if you have a truck or trailer.
Go to Menards (or a like business) out in the lot they will usually have a pallet full of broken bags of mulch. We purchased a pallet full (aprox 40 bags) for $20. I mulched around 9 trees, bens raspberries, my rhubarb, under the Teepee, Grandmas rhubarb and now am working on "landscaping" around the house. ALL FOR $20. In front of the house I was a little pickier, yes I wanted the same color. Simple. I had a TON of dark brown mulch. I put a thin layer of other colors down and then topped it all off with the brown. Easy Peasy.
